About Me

Thom J. Woodward

In case you haven’t figured it out, I am a technically proficient and creative sound designer, audio engineer, and live event producer whose work has been heard across various media and in live productions for over 20 years. I have a deep passion for delivering dynamic and impactful productions. My appreciation for the relationship between sound and storytelling was developed as a Radio-TV-Film major at Howard University. It was there that I formed a great appreciation for the production process and the art of storytelling in radio. Throughout my career, these sentiments have only deepened and widened as my experiences have extended beyond radio production and broadcast media and into live event production and theatrical sound design. I would describe myself as an innovative, problem-solving, storyteller and collaborator. At least, that is always the vision I have for and of myself whenever I accept any project. My primary goal is for my presence and my contribution to matter. I love what I do, and I hope that that shows up in my work.

Over the past few years, I have been able to adapt my varied technical and artistic background into opportunities for teaching and mentorship. I have developed an original audio production and sound design curriculum that centers around introducing students to a wide range of technical and artistic applications of sound. Leveraging experiences in my own professional career, experiential and project-based learning provide the vehicle for students to develop an advanced understanding of how sound can be used to entertain, inform, and enhance a preproduction or live experience.

With all of this said, I am not a one-dimensional character. When I am not designing, producing, or mixing, I enjoy playing tennis or a little bit of golf from time to time. Just a few years ago, I was a master club fitter for all of the major golf club manufacturers and even a brand ambassador for one of them. I still play my saxophone on rare occasion.

However, most of all, I relish the time I spend with my family. Long drives, movies, our YouTube music mix nights, eating out, what we call “The Family Game,” and lots of laughter are the best!

What I Offer

I could go into a whole thing about the benefits of working with me, but I think Alexis Hartwick has captured the experience quite well:

The best part about working with Thom is his positive attitude and how he helps to create a collaborative work environment. Thom has a strong background in audio engineering. He can quickly adapt to new equipment and scenarios, making him an excellent choice for various events, whether a theatrical production, fundraising event, or in the recording studio. Thom’s expertise and warm personality create a sense of confidence in his ability to perform any job.
